Ohio’s TechCred program Opens in October to Fund Training

The state of Ohio recently launched its new $30 Million “TechCred” Program, desiring to strengthen Ohio’s skilled workforce by reimbursing employers who help current or new employees earn industry-recognized, technology-focused credentials. Ohio will reimburse up to $2,000 per credential (capped at $30,000 per funding round) to those businesses whose applications are approved.

Ohio has approved numerous credentials for this program, most focused in the IT and skilled manufacturing and construction arenas. Qualifying costs include tuition, lab fees, manuals, textbooks, and certification costs.

Ohio employers may apply for reimbursement of credentialing of both current and prospective Ohio resident employees. Independent contractors or 1099 employees are not eligible for this program unless converted to a W2 employee following receipt of the credential.

Although awards are given on a competitive basis, not first come-first serve, the first funding round is only open October 1 through 31, 2019, so employers must act quickly to submit their applications online.
