About Scott
“That’s the great part of the job – knowing we’re adding value and helping our clients succeed. It’s more than just putting numbers on a form.”
A tax consulting professional with more than two decades experience, Scott has an eagle eye for identifying tax savings opportunities and helping companies minimize their tax burden. He’s an unparalleled tax strategist with an encyclopedic knowledge of the tax code – a combination that has helped him find hundreds of thousands of tax savings for his clients.
His ability to distill technical topics down to an understandable and actionable plan makes him a sought-after resource, and he’s dedicated his career to helping clients minimize tax and implement solutions to challenging multi-faceted issues.
As the leader of Barnes Dennig’s real estate and cost segregation practices, Scott helps companies speed up tax depreciation for real estate investments, often able to front-load tax savings into a shorter timespan – which means more capital to invest in additional projects or operations.
Scott is a certified mergers and acquisitions advisor and certified business valuation analyst, digging deep into every nuance of a company’s value and ensuring an optimized deal structure that also minimizes the tax impact of the transaction for his clients.
He’s helped clients across a wide range of industries negotiate millions of dollars in tax credits for employment and training, investments, manufacturing, development, and renewable energy initiatives. Scott works closely with economic development entities at the local, county, and state levels, keeping on top of what credits and incentives are available so that when a company is ready to expand, move to a new location, or is simply looking for tax savings opportunities, he can recommend an optimal solution.
Experience in both private industry as a controller and in public accounting gives Scott an in-depth understanding and empathy for his clients’ needs. His ability to understand the client’s business operations and identify opportunities to tweak operations helps clients take advantage of tax savings opportunities that were previously out of reach. “It doesn’t become a burden to them or otherwise change what they’re doing – it’s identifying a tweak that enables them to accomplish the same goal – but with a better tax result,” he says.
Scott is a frequent speaker and authors many of the firm’s blog posts and white papers. He’s a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants (OSCPA), National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts (NACVA), and the Alliance of Merger & Acquisition Advisors (AM&AA). He graduated from Northern Kentucky University with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting.
When he isn’t untangling the intricacies of the tax code and helping clients find new opportunities for tax savings, Scott is an active outdoorsman who loves fishing, golfing, and spending time with his beautiful wife and three beautiful daughters and what he affectionately refers to as their “pet lazy dog.”
