About Tom

A nationally recognized industry thought leader and head of Barnes Dennig’s assurance practice, Tom serves as the Technical Director for the AICPA’s Center for Plain English Accounting (CPEA), and Accounting Today has named him one of the Top 100 Most Influential People in Accounting

He’s been on multiple national and international standard-setting committees and speaks annually at many conferences. His leadership has been crucial to the successful adoption of new accounting standards (revenue, lease accounting, and CECL). Frequently quoted in national publications and writing monthly for CPEA, Tom’s recent Journal of Accountancy article on reimagining risk assessment has generated widespread acclaim.

In 2025, Forbes named Tom to America’s Best-in-State CPAs list in recognition of his skill and dedication to both the profession and the community.

In his role as Technical Director of CPEA, Tom’s contributed significantly to developing educational resources for CPAs, including a multi-year project to create the Reimagining Risk Assessment course.

Tom is also a founding member of the inaugural Financial Accounting Foundation Private Company Council, which works with the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) to determine if and how U.S. GAAP should be adapted for private companies, and is a member of the Xavier University Williams College of Business Accounting Advisory Board.

He is a past member of the International Financial Reporting Standards’ Small- and Medium-sized Entity Implementation Group and served as a member of the FASB’s Private Company Financial Reporting Committee (PCFRC), where he led efforts to reduce costs for private entities testing goodwill for impairment. In addition, he has served on the AICPA’s Private Companies Practice Section Technical Issues Committee and on the Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants’ Audit and Accounting Committee.

Every year, Tom speaks at numerous national and regional events, including webcasts, hybrid seminars, and keynote presentations. In addition, he’s been quoted in many local and national publications, and asked by attorneys across the nation to testify as an expert witness in accounting-related cases.

Tom is a summa cum laude graduate of Xavier University with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. He also holds a Master of Business Administration degree with a concentration in Finance with High Honor from Xavier University. Because of his continued support of the university and professional renown, Xavier University has appointed him a member of its Williams College of Business Accounting Advisory Board.
