Below is a chart from the 2011 Non-Profit Benchmarking Study noting the primary source of funding for participating organizations. More than 50% of the funding comes from direct contributions or government sources, as it did in the 2009 study. Operating in such a volatile marketplace and with such reliance on government funds and contributions shows the importance for organizations to develop new sources of funding.
